You can wear a shield, or even dual wield shields, with no penalty. I've been playing Dungeons of Dredmor for about 84 minutes now. After a bit of fiddling around I've come up with a build that I'm quite enjoying: Unarmed / Warlockery / Blood Magic / Berserker / Psionics / Burglary / Archaelogy. All I have to say; it's fantastic, and I know I've barely even scratched the surface, but I'm in love with the humor, gameplay, and art style of this game. Unarmed is amazing, especially because it allows you to dual wield shields and still do great damage.
