My 1959 Land Rover has an all aluminum body on a steel chassis. Damage the coating and let moisture in and it'll peel off surprisingly quickly. Zinc chromate protects the aluminum because the zinc will act as a sacrificial metal and corrode in favor of the aluminum. The anodized coloring has penetrated into the aluminum.
